Talent Development

Our ambition reaches far beyond the development of talented athletes.

We seek to nurture capable leaders who approach the world with vigor.

TRADITIONAL TRAINING

Many training programs teach skills in such isolation that children do not learn to apply them under the demanding conditions of a match. In other words, the players do not develop their cognitive abilities. In addition, many training sessions are merely a collection of drills that have no correlation to the player's role within a system of play.

TOVO TRAINING

The TOVO Training methodology promotes a logical progression of exercises that directly construct the conditions under which a player will need to perform. This learner-based program uses pattern recognition and geometric forms to simplify the complexity of the game. In the end, a footballer must have the capability and the confidence to play the game intelligently.

TOVO Training is a football training method that develops talented players through a progressive series of game-based exercises.

1 LEARNING MODEL

All five components of the 5|1 Framework are vital to implementing an effective talent development program.

1 PLAYER

The protagonist of the program is the footballer. Each athlete commits to maximizing his potential. TOVO Training develops a player’s competence, cognition and character so that he may succeed on and off the field.

2 COACH

Learning facilitators are those who guide the athletes toward mastery. All
facilitators must commit to the holistic development of the student athlete.

  • Coaches serve as competent guides.
  • Parents serve as supportive role models.
  • Teachers serve as capable educators.
  • Peers serve as motivators and confidants.

3 TRAINING SESSION

The training method emphasizes pattern recognition as a critical skill
within a player’s arsenal.

Training is presented as “scaffolded instruction.” By this we mean teaching in a progressive manner that builds upon the baseline competencies of the athlete.

Training activities move toward greater complexity as the player demon- strates proficiency. The athlete must experience success long enough only to seek the next challenge. This is done by altering the number of players and by adjusting the space in which a task must be performed.

4 TRAINING ENVIRONMENT

Learning conditions are the optimal circumstances in which athletes acquire skills and apply them effectively. The training environment must be conducive to learning and support both individual and collective growth.

  • Athletes learn best in challenging yet safe environments.
  • Athletes learn best when expectations are high.
  • Athletes learn best through praise and recognition.
  • Athletes learn best through implicit instruction and self-regulation.

5 TRAINING PROGRAM

The training program serves as our core curriculum. The governing concept is that athletes learn as individuals within a team context. In essence, a player embarks on a journey of guided self-discovery. The aim is to train toward mastery. The TOVO Training program is...

  • Purposeful
  • Progressive
  • Patterned
  • Precise
  • Positive
  • Playful

The Learning Model

Success in any endeavor is a result of effectively activating a learning process to achieve the outcomes desired.

Human beings are natural learners, capable of making meaning and overcoming challenges. The acquisition and application of new skills is a proactive process of inquiry, discovery, execution, and assessment.

INQUIRY
Children are curious.
Children are able.

DISCOVERY
Children learn through observation and imitation.
Children learn through trial and error.

EXECUTION
Children learn through demonstration.
Children seek successful outcomes.

ASSESSMENT
Children continually evaluate decisions made and actions taken. Children learn through reflection and adaptation.

Motivated athletes will tap into this process and find the energy and focus required to achieve the desired goals.

Our training program is founded upon sound pedagogical principles. When we respect the learning process, we tap into a source of true empowerment.

Our challenge is not to complicate the game, but to simplify it so that each player begins to recognize the keys to elite performance. We train footballers to be able to play with precision and pace.

Principles of Play

There is great nobility in helping others reach their potential.

The TOVO Training method looks at football through the lens of learning and provides a pathway for achievement. When implemented it will appear simple and logical compared to the chaos and clutter of traditional training methodologies. But in that simplicity players will find order and fulfillment.

By introducing TOVO’s 14 Principles of Play, we help young players master concepts that they will apply throughout their entire football development. They will practice toward consistent execution of these principles and in doing so play capably and confidently.

Mastery is the capacity to execute an idea quickly and effectively.

Brain training changes your capacity to think and learn

“What we have discovered is that a key factor for an effective transfer from the training environment to reality is that the training program ensures ‘Cognitive Fidelity’, this is, it should faithfully represent the mental demands that happen in the real world.”
